Frequently Asked Questions
What will my pre-op routine look like?

Your physician will provide you complete details, but generally patients must refrain from drinking or eating for at least 12 hours prior to surgery. Your physician may also ask you to pause taking certain medications prior to surgery. Any medication changes should not be made without first consulting your physician.
As is the case with most surgical procedures, be sure to secure transportation to and from the surgery center or hospital.

What happens during the procedure?

During a vertebral augmentation, the physician will use a thin needle to insert a small balloon into the spine, then inflate the balloon to create space between the vertebrae and restore height. Finally, a specialized cement is injected into the space to stabilize the spine. This minimally invasive procedure takes approximately an hour to complete.

What should I expect post-operation?

The procedure can be performed as an outpatient surgery in a physician’s office, an ambulatory surgery center or in a hospital. Patients generally leave the same day.

While each case is different, patients can usually expect rapid pain relief, with full recovery in four to six weeks. There may be short-term restrictions on driving, heavy lifting and vigorous exercise.

What do I need to know about post-operative care?

Your physician will provide detailed information on post-operative care. They will also instruct you on how to take care of the small incision area for optimal healing.
